Mid-Century Modern Interior Style

The Mid-century modern interior style has been popular for a long time. It started as a design movement in the 1940s-1970s post war era, a lot of new materials were introduced and more modern design and furniture were developed during this time.

It has strong ties to the German Bauhaus and Scandinavian style and it’s a very timeless design with a lot of straight lines, clean/minimalist aspects with no embellishments. Form and function are in focus and you can often see angled/tapered legs. The more popular materials are solid wood, wood/marble, wood/plastic, wood/metal to create contrast.

In terms of color palette- if you prefer a more neutral color palette, stick to different kinds of wood and leather. If you want to add a pop of color, go for muted colors such as dark green, mustard yellow, dark red, or teal.

Some iconic Mid-Century pieces are the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, the Noguchi table, the Tulip table, and the Womb chair. These can all be purchased at Design Within Reach or you can try to find these items at auction.

More budget friendly option are IKEA and All Modern, and mid-range options would be CB2 and West Elm. The good thing about the Mid-Century style is that if you do decide to invest in some pieces they won’t go out of style since this is such a classic and timeless interior style.
